Richard earned his brokers license in 1982 and opened Dana Realty as a traditional real estate firm three years later. In 1989, recognizing the need for buyer's agents, Richard was one of the first real estate brokers in North Carolina to offer buyers the choice of having their own agent.

He has held every elective office of the Pinehurst / Southern Pines Association of Realtors, including President in 1994.
